Avildsen shot hours of footage of the tournament from multiple angles
Synopsis
Decades after their 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament fight, a middle-aged Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence find themselves as martial arts rivals once again. During the original filming of The Karate Kid , the late director John G. The Cobra Kai crew dug through the studio vault and found a ton of never-before-seen clips that they could work into the show via flashbacks. One of them is Zabka’s real mom, who was in the stands from multiple angles that weren’t seen until 2018.
Ralph Macchio told Uproxx that there are three completely new angles of the famous crane kick
Many believe that Miyagi’s name on his gravestone is a continuity error, considering that in The Karate Kid 4 (1994), his first name is given as Keisuke, but it was actually previously shown on a sign held for him by Chozen in The Karate Kid 2 (1986) and was Nariyoshi. This means that it was The Next Karate Kid who changed his name, while Cobra Kai kept the name given to him earlier. Another interesting fact, however, is that the name given in The Karate Kid Part II was not the original first name given to Miyagi. In The Karate Kid (1984), it can be briefly seen on Miyagi’s dog tags, attached to the keys of the 1948 Ford given to Daniel for his birthday, that Miyagi’s first name is Hideo.
They appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: Anthony Mackie/Ralph Macchio/Kiry Shabazz (2018)
I was a teenager in the 80s and I enjoyed watching this movie – like most guys my age. I was a little skeptical when I saw they were making a new series set 30 years after the movie ended. But when I saw the trailers – I felt like they might be onto something. After watching a few episodes – I can say they hit the nail on the head.
It’s not corny or stupid either
It’s the best series out there – anywhere. It’s not over the top (or under acted). It’s the perfect mix of seriousness with a few blunders or 80s references here and there. This revival could have been a disaster, but it seems like they got the perfect combination of writers, directors and actors.
But as a 40 year old – I’m kind of rooting for him
It’s funny because as a kid I wanted to punch Johnny in the throat as hard as I could. Great job to the people responsible for making this happen – and of course it couldn’t have happened without Ralph and William. Thank you!
