Synopsis
Embroiled in a mysterious relationship with her deceased best friend from the Army, an Afghanistan veteran finds herself confronted by her Vietnam veteran grandfather at the family’s ancestral lake house. Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris previously starred together in Gone Baby Gone (2007). One of the best films I’ve seen in a long time. It’s a story about coping with the loss of loved ones – past or future – which is of course a theme in many films, if you think about it. The way it’s done in MDFZ is surprising and what actually happened is kept in the middle for most of the running time. It’s much more than a film about American veterans, which might be an initial distraction for non-American viewers. It made me think about a lot of things going on in my personal life and that really put my mind at ease. I sincerely hope the film gets a proper European distribution as well. The reception it received here at a Dutch film festival seems promising.
